Seven Sheds microbrewery and hop garden is located in the topiary-themed town of Railton. Opened in May 2008 by Willie Simpson and Catherine Stark, it offers free tastings in a well-appointed cellar-door building, overlooking the flourishing hop bines. Visitors can purchase take-away bottles, enjoy a glass of ale in undercover outdoor seating, or sign up for a brewery tour (12noon, 2pm, bookings essential). Cheese platters are available during the summer months.
Regular brews include the hoppy Kentish Ale, the popular Willie Warmer dark ale, a raspberry-infused wheat ale (Razzamatazz), Elephant’s Trunk (a strong Belgian-style ale) and Paradise Pale. Seasonal and one-off brews include an organic oatmeal stout, India Pale Ale, Smokin’ Bagpipes – a peat-smoked Scotch ale – and Royal Willie, which is matured in ex-whisky oak casks.
Seven Sheds Brewery is open 11am to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday from September to May, plus Monday and Tuesday during January (ie trading 11am to 5pm seven days from 1 Jan to 31 Jan). 11am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday during the winter months (June to August).
